What is Track Tiles?
Unlike our other products, Track Tiles offers hands-on engagement with shape, pattern and number.
There are 4 card types: straights, corners, 'T' junctions and cross-roads. The base pack provides 144 double-sided Track Tiles, made from thick card, with an accompanying CD
containing 4 brilliant activities (2 of these also exist in The Number Gym). Additional packs of 144 cards can then be added to your order if required.
The practical nature of engaging with the tiles allows learners to see more clearly the structural nature of geometric shapes and to develop a sense of what underlies the construction of simple algebraic patterns and relationships.
Manipulating the tiles can also facilitate the development of systematic and logical approaches to problem solving - key elements of mathematical thinking.
Ian Sugarman's comprehensive user guide includes investigative topics on Constructing Circuits, Growing Patterns, Forming Letters and Numerals and making patterns using Translation, Reflection and Rotation among others.
| Pattern Maker This virtual version of Track Tiles has the advantage of enabling the learner to move or copy blocks of tiles. The image you see here was created from just 9 tiles in the top left corner which were then reflected in the vertical axis. The who set was then reflected in the horizontal axis and the rest was done by copying the block and tiling the copies. |
